ResourcePrecacher by Pisex — precaching custom models and sounds in CS2

Engine (base): pure MetaMod:Source (native C++). CounterStrikeSharp is NOT REQUIRED.

Software type: server utility / resource manager.

Highlight: fixes crashes and invisible textures by forcing the player's client to download custom content and load it into memory on connect.

Author: Pisex

ResourcePrecacher is a specialized server utility for Counter-Strike 2, written in pure C++ to run directly on MetaMod:Source. It solves one of the most common problems of servers with custom content: player crashes and broken third-party textures.

🚀 Why does CS2 need ResourcePrecacher?

On the Source 2 engine, the way custom resources work changed completely compared to CS:GO. If you simply install a plugin with custom weapon skins, unique agent models or end-of-round sounds, regular players just won't see or hear them. In the worst case, the game crashes to desktop the first time the engine tries to draw an object that wasn't cached.

ResourcePrecacher takes care of this for you: it registers the exact paths to your files on FastDL and passes them to the connecting client to precache right before it joins the map.

📦 Required extensions and dependencies:

For the utility to run correctly and stably, first deploy the base extension by the same author:

➔ CS2 Menus & Utils (main extension) — https://github.com/Pisex/cs2-menus

➔ MetaMod:Source (current Master branch) — https://www.metamodsource.net/downloads.php?branch=master

📂 Official project resources:

➔ Main ResourcePrecacher repository on GitHub: https://github.com/Pisex/ResourcePrecacher

🛠️ Installation and config setup:

1. Make sure your server has a fresh, working MetaMod:Source (Master branch).

2. Open the Releases section of the official repository on GitHub, download the latest ResourcePrecacher release and unpack the archive on the server at:

addons/metamod/

3. Go to the plugin's config file at:

addons/metamod/configs/resource_precacher.json

(or the equivalent config file generated in the plugin folder).

4. Enter the exact paths to your model files (with the .vmdl_c extension) or sounds that must be forced to load on the player's client.

5. Restart the game server and check that the extension loaded with the server console command:

meta list

⚠️ Important for admins: this plugin only makes the game precache files on the client side. The custom resource files themselves must already be uploaded to your FastDL server (external HTTP hosting), and the paths in the json config must match the real FastDL paths exactly, character for character.
